Chapter 8 – Standardized Tests vs. Classroom Performance

Dropouts performed slightly lower in the classroom compared to their standardized testing ability in 5th grade math, while graduates performed slightly higher in the classroom compared to their standardized testing ability. Over time, graduates continued to achieve at the same levels on standardized tests and course grades, while dropouts achieved significantly less in the classroom compared to their standardized test scores. Not only did dropouts decrease in their classroom and standardized test score performances over time, but the gap between their standardized test scores or ability and their classroom grades or performance indicated that dropouts increasingly underperformed in classrooms.
